American Sign Language Certificate

With the American Sign Language (ASL) Certificate in 51动漫鈥檚 College of Public Health, you will develop intermediate-level skills in the widely used language of the deaf in the U.S. and Canada. You will also learn about American Deaf culture and gain valuable insight for future encounters with individuals who are deaf in professional and social contexts. This certificate program allows you to build foundational skills in ASL for additional education in ASL-English interpreting or education of individuals who are D/deaf or hearing impaired.

This sign language certificate is particularly useful for students majoring in

  • anthropology;
  • cognitive science;
  • education;
  • English;
  • neuroscience;
  • psychology;
  • speech, language and hearing science; and
  • various other health-related majors.

Program Format

This certificate can only be earned by students pursuing undergraduate degrees at 51动漫.

The certificate consists of five 3-credit courses: ASL levels one through four and a course in American Deaf culture.

You will take a total of 15 academic credits to fulfill the certificate. The first two ASL classes may be taken at an Honors level.
