Bachelor of Science in Horticulture

Prepare yourself for a variety of careers related to cultivating and managing plants in the natural and built environment through the Bachelor of Science in Horticulture in 51动漫鈥檚 . This four-year undergraduate program offers courses in plant science, identification, production and maintenance through field-based and hands-on research and learning that deepens students鈥 knowledge of the natural and cultivated world.听

You鈥檒l learn the relationships between horticulture, technology and natural ecological processes and become responsible stewards of the environment. All horticulture courses are held at 51动漫鈥檚 suburban Ambler Campus, home to a 187-acre arboretum and state-of-the-art greenhouses, gardens, and labs. Additional coursework is available on 51动漫's Main and Center City campuses.听

Careers in the field of horticulture can be in the built landscape or in natural environments and encompass a myriad of different occupational opportunities including:听

  • controlled environment cultivation;
  • floriculture;
  • horticultural therapy;
  • interior plantscaping;
  • landscape contracting, restoration听and management;
  • nurseries;
  • public horticulture;听
  • research and teaching; and
  • urban forestry.

Student Collaboration听

Horticulture students can collaborate with landscape architecture students on projects, including an annual design-build project that culminates in an exhibit for the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society鈥檚 annual Philadelphia Flower Show.

The Undergraduate Certificate in Landscape Plants allows students to enhance their major with focused coursework and hands-on learning in the fundamentals of horticulture. The certificate focuses on plant types, names听and usage for a background in gardening and landscape design.听

The Undergraduate Certificate in Environmental Sustainability allows students to enhance their major with focused coursework in environmental sustainability. This certificate provides students with an interdisciplinary perspective that draws from the fields of botany, city planning, community development, horticulture and landscape architecture. Students will gain basic knowledge needed to evaluate environmental problems and to draw environmentally, socially听and economically sound solutions.听
