Bachelor of Science in General Science and Mathematics with Teaching

The General Science and Mathematics with Teaching Major explores a breadth of disciplines necessary to support a secondary education in science and mathematics. Students may complete a concentration in either natural sciences or technology, which requires courses in astronomy, chemistry, geology and physics, or choose to complete a mathematics concentration, which requires courses in calculus, geometry and statistics.

Program Outcomes

Students who complete the General Science and Mathematics with Teaching program will

  • understand scientific methodology through laboratory investigation and study of science history and models;
  • have the ability to process and evaluate theoretical and real-life quantitative data, and the skills needed to recognize, isolate and solve mathematical problems;
  • understand how to use and evaluate scientific literature;
  • understand how to design and deliver lessons and curriculums using the 5E model;
  • have experience in utilizing state-of-the-art technology in designing lessons, and be able to teach the technology skills necessary for the future success of their students;
  • know how to create a classroom environment of respect and rapport that fosters a positive climate for learning, equity and excellence; and
  • learn to fulfill professional roles and responsibilities and adhere to the legal and ethical requirements of the profession.

Upon completion of the program, students will have the knowledge and skills to successfully complete , allowing them to apply for a . Obtaining the certificate will then allow them to enter the education field to teach general science and/or introductory mathematics in the secondary grades.

51¶¯Âþ TUteach

TUteach is a collaboration between the and the . TUteach integrates a secondary school (grades seven through 12) mathematics or science teaching track so you can become eligible to take the Praxis certification exam upon graduation.

Classes & Curriculum

This 124-credit program is offered on 51¶¯Âþ’s Main Campus and can be completed in eight traditional semesters.

In addition to university and college requirements, the General Science and Mathematics with Teaching Major program requires that at least nine courses required for the major be completed at 51¶¯Âþ, with at least six courses completed in the College of Science and Technology and three courses completed in the .Ìý

Students are also strongly encouraged to take one of the following courses to increase training and fieldwork experience.Ìý
