What are extramurals?

While Intramurals are specifically designed to be competed on campus, Extramurals provides intramural participants an opportunity to play in an activity against other colleges and universities. Please see the Intramural Coordinator for the criteria for a team to participate in extramurals.聽 Extramurals are sponsored by the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA), the Pennsylvania Intramural Recreational Sports Association (PIRSA) and the Philadelphia City 6. Each activity has different rules or regulations that would be discussed with teams that meet the criteria.

History of Philadelphia City 6 Extramural Classic

The City 6 Extramural Classic was founded in 1986 by representatives from 51动漫 and Saint Joseph's University as a way to encourage recreational sports and social interaction among the city universities.聽The first championship tournament was held that fall at the聽University of Penn鈥檚 Franklin Field.聽聽

The idea for City 6 arose at a post-dinner discussion between former Campus Recreation director at 51动漫 (Steve Young) and then-director of recreation at St. Joseph's University (Mike Diorka) while attending a NIRSA conference in聽Las Vegas, NV in 1985.聽Steve started jotting notes down on a napkin, shown below, with ideas for what sports City 6 should host, which schools should be involved, possible logo ideas, basic philosophy, etc.聽

Over 30 years later, through multiple sponsors, coordinators, champions and participants, the Philadelphia City 6 Extramural Classic lives on and is an integral part of the intramural programs for each of the six schools.聽
